Our Story

Welcome to Big 5 Guest House. Tol and Isabel would like to personally thank you for choosing to stay with us and extend a warm South African welcome. Our passion is creating a comfortable, memorable experience for every guest, and we take pride in offering exceptional hospitality with a personal touch.

Big 5 Guest House began its journey in 2000. After years of travelling abroad, we returned with a dream of creating a unique guest experience in the heart of Mpumalanga. What started as an empty piece of land gradually became a welcoming retreat for travellers from near and far. The property first served as our family home and offices. Over time, through careful planning, dedication, and several phases of development, it was transformed into the guest house you see today. Every aspect of the layout and gardens was personally designed by us, reflecting our vision of comfort, tranquillity, and authentic South African hospitality.

Today, Big 5 Guest House stands as a testament to that dream. We are proud of what it has become and look forward to welcoming you as part of our story.

I had an absolutely wonderful stay at Big5 Guest House in Witbank. From the moment I arrived, I was warmly welcomed by the incredibly friendly and accommodating staff, who went out of their way to make sure I felt comfortable throughout my visit.

The rooms are spacious, beautifully maintained, and thoughtfully equipped with everything you could possibly need for a relaxing stay. It really felt like a home away from home.

One of the standout highlights was the food — truly exceptional. Every meal was delicious, well-prepared, and clearly made with care. It’s not often you find a place where the dining experience is just as memorable as the accommodation, but Big5 Guest House delivers on both.

For someone like me who enjoys and loves wildlife, this place was perfect. They took the beauty of wildlife and brought it inside, creating a cozy, warm, and inviting atmosphere.

The food was excellent, and the chef together with the staff made every meal feel special. From reception to service, everyone was professional, welcoming, and friendly. I also loved the quietness of the guest house—it gave me the peace I needed to focus, and I even passed the certificate I came to Witbank to train for.

What a lovely place, actually what a surprise in discovering this place. Comfortable rooms, friendly service and nice food. I also used their conference facilities, neat, tasteful with old world charm. The last day of training a 1 day course our business prepared for 14 people and 19 turned up as by word of mouth they heard about the lovely venue and catering. The guesthouse was willing to assist in accommodating all who arrived. AND THEN, the gem of Anneli's tea garden on the same premises.

Beautiful decor and more decor, to get lost in. What a feast for the eyes. Most delicious cakes to choose from. It was so nice that I had to order a cake to take home after my visit.

I spent two night here with my girlfriend on our 1 year anniversary, the food was amazing, the staff was polite and the owners are accessible on the property; whom I might add are very polite.

We swam in the pool, it was nice, we walked around the array of scenery and when checking in, we were helped quickly, conveniently and allocated our room before we even knew it. The service is good and efficient.

There's a little coffee shop on site with the most beautiful plants and environment. I'd definitely go back there.

Upmarket guesthouse in a quiet suburb of Emalahleni. Staff are friendly and helpful throughout.

A special mention to Thandeka who was responsible to keep my and my colleagues adjacent rooms in order over the 3 days of our stay. Her energy, vibe and attention to detail is commendable and infectious.
